In a game of homeworld, you need eyes and ears, without them, you are doomed.
Probes, Proximity Sensors, Sensor Arrays,
Scouts, and Cloak Generators, these are your eyes and ears. Each has its
unique strenghts, weaknessess, and places in the game. Recon can tell you what type of commander you are playing against so
that you can alter your playing style to match it. Making you one step ahead of the oppsing player, and keeping you in control.
Probes
Most people build a few probes in the beginning of the game, and send them out. HONESTLY what are you expecting to find?
A destroyer? no, trust me, they have 5 scouts, and thats it. save your probes for a while into the game, about the time you start
on your 3rd teir of research, about the time they will either be ready with a million scouts or starting their huge fleet of cap ships.
If you see them with a ton of scouts, bring out a gravwell generator, with a cloak, (the cloak generator is optional) save it until they
are well within the grav well feild, "use the caps lock key". Then waste them. Another use for probes is distraction, build
like 5 of them, and send them all at him, he'll see all these red blips, and panic, then bring in your main fleet, cloaked or jump.
Prox Sensors Bring out a few prox sensors, they are fast, and manuverable, cheap, and everything that makes them
just as good as a scout. But you can move them more than once, and they can see cloaked things. Always keep one on each side of your
mothership. And they are so cheap, use them instead of probes. They also allow you to see the individual blips on the sensors, if
they are in range. Sensor Array This is an extreamly slow and unmanuverable unit, but it does increase your blue bubbles,
and allows you to see the individual blips of the enemie. If you see a bunch of them in a line, then you know its fighters, if you see a couple
widley spaced, its cap ships. Keep this in mind. ScoutsSome people like to use these as their main attack force, i however use
them to get crates, and before i go in to mess with his harvesting, i fly them by the blips that are furthest away from his mothership, to see if
they are being gaurded by anything. If you use probes, he'll know you're up to something, and bring ships out to destroy the probe, just fly your
scouts by and then keep on moving. Cloak Generators And to a lesser degree, cloaked fighters. These are good scouts because
they can go anywhere and do anything. Without being detected. They can also jump while cloaked, so if you need on the spot recon, its avilable to you.
the recon is better left to the cloaked fighters. Save your cloak generators for gaurding cap ships or support figgates. Use them for scouting as a secondary function.
